March 2017

Deadline for Submissions, Sigma Tau Delta Student Colloquium

March 10, 2017

The Eta Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary society at SRU, invites you to present at our upcoming spring colloquium. A colloquium is simply another word for a conference; however, this colloquium will be exclusively for students and faculty of Slippery Rock University. The event will take place on Saturday, April 22nd, in the McKay Auditorium. This year we have opened up our colloquium outside of the English department in order to collaborate and learn from the work of our colleagues across many departments under a common theme of Resistance. Your presentation may directly address the theme, or it may be a more creative interpretation of resistance. The beauty of themes such as this one is that it is flexible enough to accommodate many different takes on the subject. Because this colloquium is specific to the university, it is small enough to create a comfortable space for students to practice presenting before attending a larger conference. You will get to read your critical or creative work in front of your peers, giving you experience for your resume or CV. Presenting can be a challenge, so what better way to get experience than by practicing with your peers? We have one keynote speaker so far (though we may have a second confirmed soon). Sarah Marshall, from the Southern Poverty Law Center, will be speaking and sharing her scholarship. She is a staff writer for both The New Republic and The Week. Her work combines academic research, pop culture, and law in interesting ways, as her famed article from The Believer about Tonya Harding, outlaws, and the aesthetics of figure skating displays. Please join us for our colloquium this April! Submit abstracts* by 10 March (Friday) to: Dr. Ruppert – timothy.ruppert@sru.edu Prof. McGinty – patrick.mcginty@sru.edu Prof. Shoemaker – lauren.shoemaker@sru.edu *If you’ve never written an abstract before, that’s okay! They’re easy, and a lot of professors are willing to help. Contact Prof. McGinty or Prof. Shoemaker if you’re struggling with writing one. For any questions about the colloquium details, please feel free to contact any of the professors above.
