SRU Kaleidoscope Art Festival

The 18th annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival at Slippery Rock University will be held April 11 – April 27!
In addition to fantastic capstone events from the SRU Departments of Dance, Theatre, Music, English, and Art, the 2019 festival will also feature the following film screenings, guest artists, multi-disciplinary and community events:
- April 11, 4 pm (ATS Auditorium): Pernkopf to present day: Nazi Anatomists and ethical implications of their work by Aaron Fried – lecture sponsored by Bailey Library and the History Department.
- April 16, 6 pm (SSC Theater): Faces Places (rated PG/run-time 90 minutes) – 89-year old French New Wave director, Agnes Varda, and acclaimed 33-year old French photographer & muralist, JR, travel around the villages of France in JR’s photo truck meeting locals, learning their stories, and producing epic-size portraits of them.
- April 17, 7:30 pm, $6 (SWC 111): Vladimir Mollov: Bulgarian Accordion Virtuoso – Mollov will perform traditional Bulgarian music as well as his own compositions in the Bulgarian style with bass and guitar; sponsored by the Music Department.
- April 18, 12:30 pm (Vincent 105): Public Art in Urban Spaces: A Criterion for Their Evaluation – Lecture and discussion with Dr. Fred Evans, Philosophy Professor & Coordinator of the Center for Interpretive & Qualitative Research at Duquesne University; sponsored by SRU Philosophy Club and Philosophy Department.
- April 18, 12:30 pm (SWC 111); April 19, 11 am (Alumni House): Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas – Award-winning contemporary Haida artist, author and speaker will present “Art as Resistance: Haida Sovereignty, History, and Politics” on 4/18 and “Haida Manga and Graphic Novels” on 4/19; sponsored by the Native American Studies Series, the College of Liberal Arts, Kaleidoscope Arts Festival, English and Philosophy Departments.
- April 19, 12-1 pm (Field House Dance Studio); 1-2 pm (Quad): Holi Festival ft. Chitra Subramanian—A Bollywood dancer based in Washington D.C., Subramanian will lead an open master class at Noon, and then at 1 pm Rock Dance will present a performance of one of her pieces in the Quad, followed by an hour of music and throwing color to celebrate spring; co-sponsored by the Dance Department.
- April 22, 7 pm (SSC Ballroom): (un)gender(ing) dance – back by popular demand, we welcome dance artist Donald Shorter to share another facet of GENDEROSITY:PHYSICALISED; additionally, SRU Instructor of Dance, Jesse Factor, will perform his original work, Mommie Queerest and SRU Assistant Professor of Dance, Lindsay Viatori, will screen her short dance film,Meet Norma Tivity; co-sponsored by the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival, Frederick Douglass Institute, PCRED, Gender Studies and Dance Department.
- April 23, 12:30 pm (SSC Theater); 2 pm (Printmaking Studio, Art Building): Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative member, Mary Tremonte – a Pittsburgh-based artist, educator & DJ— will discuss Justseeds’ mission of creating prints and graphics in support of movements for social and environmental justice, as well as lead a workshop.
- April 23, 2 pm (Swope Recital Hall): The Brass Roots – a collection of Western Pennsylvania’s finest brass musicians performing a number of brass quintet standards from baroque to modern.
- April 23, 6 pm (SSC Theater): Third Coast Dance Film Festival – Currently in its ninth year, Third Coast celebrates the intersection of contemporary dance and the moving image with a screening series of short dance films.
- April 24, 6 pm (SSC Theater): Ann Cooper Albright – Join us for a catered reception and discussion with dancer and scholar, Albright, who will discuss her latest book, How to Land: finding ground in an unstable world, recently published by Oxford University Press; sponsored by the Departments of Dance, English, Gender Studies and Philosophy.
- April 25, 7 pm (SSC Theater): Steel City Improv Theater – Members from Pittsburgh’s original home for long-form improvisational comedy will perform a 45-minute set, ft. an opening performance from SRU’s own Rock’em Sock’em Improv Club, led by advisor, Dr. Melissa Ford.
- April 27, Noon-6 pm (Macoskey Center): Children’s Earth Day Celebration& the 29th Annual Macoskey Center EarthFest – this year’s community-oriented celebration includes arts and crafts, face painting, a petting zoo, horseback rides, games & activities for kids and sustainability-focused DIY activities for adults!
